What are chord progressions?
Chord progressions is a term that simply
means "the way chords change".
For example, if you are playing in
the key of C, the most used chords in that key are the C chord, the
F chord, and the G chord. The song will probably start and end on
the C chord, but sometime during the song the chords will change to
F and then G and then back to C.
It doesn't always work that way, but
often enough to establish a pattern that can be relied upon.
Here is a typical chord progression:
C Am7 Dm7
G7 C
And so musicians learn that certain
chord progressions occur over and over again. Usually they are
expressed in Roman numerals so that the progressions work in any
key. Here are some of the chord progressions that occur over and
